Introduction

In the framework of KM3NeT project (an European project funded under the FP6) devoted to the study of a future "Neutrino Telescope" to be located deep underwater in the Mediterranean sea, we are considering the technical solutions for the connection to the on-shore laboratory of the off-shore detector. The detector will be located in a deep-sea site (3 possible locations can be indicated here at 2500m, 3500m or 5000m depths) at a distance from the shore that can range between 50km and 100km. The connection, between the underwater equipment and the on-shore laboratory, should be able to provide power to the detector and to transmit data/control on optical fibres. The KM3NeT Consortium is considering several options for the detector layout. The number of fibres and the amount of power that the cable should carry vary according to the different detector layouts that we are envisaging. No one of the indicated cable configurations requires off-shore optical amplification.

Technical Characteristics

A B
Length [km]1 50 or 100 50 or 100
Type of power to be transmitted DC, one polarity + sea return DC, one polarity + sea return
Maximum Power load [kW] 100 50
Maximum Voltage [kV] 10 10
Maximum Current [A] 10 10
Power Transmission efficiency 95% 95%
Cable resistance [Ω/km] 1 1
Number of fibres2 1003 24

1for each cable configuration we would like to have an estimate of feasibility for both indicated length
2for each solution we would like to know about the possibility to use the following kind of G655 fibres: MFD fibres, LEAF fibres, NZDSF.
3we would like to know about the possibility to use fibres organized in ribbons.

Cost evaluation

In order to estimate the total cost of the connection between the undersea detector and the on-shore laboratory, we need to evaluate of all costs related to the different phases of cable production, transport, deployment, connection and deep-sea operations.

A B
Double Armoured cable [k€/km]
Single Armoured cable [k€/km]
Light Weight cable [k€/km]
Joint box DA-SA [k€/km]
Joint box SA-LW [k€/km]
Joint box DA-DA [k€/km]
Joint box SA-SA [k€/km]
Joint box LW-LW [k€/km]
Transport cost (100 km cable to a Mediterranean port like : Marseille (France), Catania (Italy), Kalamata, (Greece)
Deployment cost (100 km cable in one of the three above mentioned sites)
Time needed for a Joint insertion during a cable repair operation (not including the fault search and the cable recovery)
In case of a non standard Universal Joint would be needed, the cost of specialized personnel for Joint insertion during a cable repair operation (cost/personnel and number of units)
