The Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso are located near the Assergi exit of the A24 tollway Teramo-Roma, 150 km. east of Roma. The nearby town of L'Aquila can be reached either from the L'Aquila Est (east) or L'Aquila Ovest (west) exit of the same highway and is connected to Roma by the public bus service ARPA.
Driving
From the 'Grande Raccordo Anulare', the circular highway around Roma, well marked on any road map, take the A24 tollway, direction L'Aquila-Teramo. If you come from the Leonardo da Vinci airport (Fiumicino), follow the signs to Roma, GRA, it will take about thirty minutes with normal traffic condition.
To the Laboratories: from exit 'Assergi' of the A24 (after L'Aquila Est), about 150 km from Roma, turn right, then immediately right again, continue for 500 m to the first building at your left, leave the car at the visitor parking, and check in at the security desk, in the Directional Center.
To Fonte Cerreto (Hotel Fiordigigli): from the same exit, continue uphill and follow the indications to 'Fonte Cerreto' to reach Hotel Fiordigigli (there are signs pointing to the Hotel), five minutes drive.
To L'Aquila: exit either at L'Aquila Est or Ovest, then follow the signs to 'Centro'. There are car traffic and parking limitation in the city historical center.
Using public transportation
From Roma Leonardo da Vinci airport to L'Aquila: Follow the direction to the airport railway station ('Stazione Ferroviaria') and take the train to Roma Stazione Tiburtina (the train final destination could be either Fara Sabina or Orte). The train runs two or three times per hour and the trip from Fiumicino to Tiburtina lasts less than one hour. Aside the Stazione Tiburtina, there is the leaving square of the blue ARPA coach to L'Aquila. The ticket must be purchased before boarding, at the ARPA ticket office: you need to specify your destination and the departure time, normally seats are available till the very last minutes before the bus starts. Note also that both the tickets and the seats are numbered. Everything is within easy walking distance.
Your final destination is L'Aquila, piazza Battaglione degli Alpini, also known as 'Fontana Luminosa': please note that some coach ride do actually end at 'Fontana Luminosa', while others continue to Teramo, a nearby town. Check with the bus driver if in doubt.
The trip from Roma to L'Aquila takes approximately one and a half-hour.
From Roma Termini main railway station to L'Aquila: Take the subway B direction Rebibbia and get out at Roma Stazione Tiburtina (railway station, as before). You can buy subway tickets at any newsstand (ask for a 'Metro' ticket). See above for directions from Stazione Tiburtina to L'Aquila.
Getting around in L'Aquila and reaching the Laboratories and Fonte Cerreto from the city center: L'Aquila is a small, pleasant city and it is possible to walk. Taxis are usually parked at Fontana Luminosa (phone +39 0862 27372) and Piazza Duomo (phone +39 0862 22115). We recommend to use them to reach either the Laboratori and Fonte Cerreto (25 Euro, approx.). Advance reservation is not possible. Please note it might be a problem to find a taxi in late evening or early morning.
