Date: Mon, 15 Sep 1997 16:52:45 +0200 From: Michael Behrens Newsgroups: desy.computing Subject: PEM - Adresses for DESY users All centrally registered users at DESY have a Uniq Email Name , e.g. Michael.Behrens@desy.de. This name is created automatically from the personal name and cannot be changed by the user. Mail sent to this account is then delivered to the so called PEM ( Preferred EMail address ). This PEM is set when a user is registered - provided he had filled out this part of the registration form. In the above example the PEM is mbehrens@mail.desy.de. The PEM can be changed by all afs users using the command mailfwd -setpem new_pem_value, all others have to ask UCO for help. Note that PEM changes become valid only on the next day. Unfortunately we have seen that many users have no PEM assigned, mainly because the PEM had no real effect when the accounts were created. In these cases mail addressed to the Uniq Email Name is undeliverable. To reduce the probablility of mail failures the Computer Center will set a PEM when it is missing in the user registry. The Computer Center will therefore create a PEM for all registered users who currently have a blank PEM in the registry. For users with multiple accounts we will define the PEM according to the scheme below. All users who are not satisfied with this proposal may either set their PEM immediately or adjust it after our action. Order of PEM- definition: userid@mail.desy.de (any wgs) userid@hermes.desy.de (hermes) userid@vxdesy.desy.de (vms) userid@x4u.desy.de (x4u) userid@dice.desy.de (dice) userid@zow.desy.de (zow) userid@ips102.desy.de (hpc) Selected is the first PEM that fits a user's account. We plan to create the missing PEMs this Thursday, September 18. In future we will assign a PEM to all new accounts according to the above policy. Michael Behrens ZDV - User Support
