The major change incorporated into the new version concerns the preferred email address. This preferred email address (PEM) is taken from your account registration form and is stored in the registration database. In a lot of cases this PEM is no longer valid and needs to be modified. With the new mailfwd command it is possible to list the current value and set the PEM to a new value if needed. The syntax for querying the information is: mailfwd -q The syntax for setting a new PEM is: mailfwd -setpem pem The PEM is currently used as the address to which warnings about account and password expiration are sent, and will be used in future to route mail that is sent to addresses of the type unique.email.name@desy.de to the correct account. This unique.email.name is assigned by the UCO at registration time and will usually be a concatination of your Firstname(s) and Lastname, e.g. Jan Hendrik Peters -> Jan.Hendrik.Peters Hans-Peter Sommer -> Hans-Peter.Sommer If you want to change this unique email name you need to contact the UCO. The mailfwd command which is available on the central VMS cluster (vxdesy) and on the IBM does not support these new features. Examples of the new mailfwd functionality and output: ---------------------------------------------------- [puls01] ~ $ mailfwd -q mailfwd ------- Mail for jan.hendrik.peters@desy.de is sent to petersjh@mail.desy.de Mail for petersjh on all AFS work group servers is forwarded to petersjh@mail.desy.de [puls01] ~ $ mailfwd -setpem petersjh@x4u2.desy.de mailfwd ------- Changing the preferred email address in the database rgy_change: Changing mail in the Registry Database. Your request will be handled in a few minutes and you'll get mail about it. Mail for jan.hendrik.peters@desy.de will be sent to Jan Hendrik Peters 3 December 1996
