TARGET USER:
user of the Italian "cluster" at DESY having an AFS account.

Since several years, DESY provides central mail servers as mail relay for outgoing messages and as mail repository for incoming messages.

Due to security reasons it is now mandatory to use the central mail server instead of using any other local machine. At the same time, it is requested to open a secure socket layer (SSL) connection when accessing any of the central mail servers at DESY as an "Incoming Mail Server".

How to do it:
  1. Configure your mail user agent to use central mail server "mail.desy.de"
  2. Set your preferred e-mail address

For more information see DESY related documentation

Configure your mail user agent (MUA):
using pine:

or read DESY documentation on how to use SSL with your email client

Set your preferred e-mail address (PEM):

  1. login on a DESY AFS machine (i.e. zenith205)

  2. create a file named   .forward"   in your italian cluster home directory,
containing your uniq e-mail address (firstname.lastname@desy.de):

      zenith>   cd   /bologna/user1/anzel
      zenith>   echo   "daniela.anzellotti@desy.de"   >   .forward

  3. create the same file on your public area on AFS and
create a link in your AFS home-directory pointing to that file:

      zenith>   cd   /afs/desy.de/user/a/anzel
      zenith>   echo   "daniela.anzellotti@desy.de"   >   public/.forward
      zenith>   ln   -s   public/.forward   .forward

  4. define your Preferred e-mail Address (username@mail.desy.de) on the mailserver:

      zenith>   /usr/local/bin/mailfwd   -setpem   anzel@mail.desy.de

and use the same command to check:

      zenith>   /usr/local/bin/mailfwd   -q

  5. logout
