Training
Types
- Complementary
training (CT): Mobility of students of the two final
years. Residences of 6 to 10
months by grant-holders.
- Advanced training (AT):
Doctorate, Master degrees or post-doctoral vocational specialisation
courses. Residences of 6 to 20
months.
- Short-term training (STT): As
part of post-graduate studies. Residences of up to 3 months.
- Research training (RT):
Specialised scientific visits for researchers. Residences of up to 6 months.
Grant-Holders
Academic Background
- Advanced Training (AT): Members of a Ph.D. Program in
Physics holding a Bachelor Degree with
thesis work in Particle Physics;
- Short Term Training (STT):
Same as before,
- Complementary Training (CT):
Members of an Undergraduate
Program in Physics or Engineering;
- Research Training (RT): Ph.D. diploma in Particle Physics
(Experiment or Theory).
Description
of the Training Programme
- The Project provides advanced training to young
physicists by embedding them in research groups at the forefront of
research in High Energy Physics (HEP), in the preparation of detectors,
hardware / software analysis tools for LHC, DESY, CNGS or Auger
experiments, or in Particle Theory. All Institutions that
will receive Grant-Holders have long-established programs of seminars
and lectures.
- Technology Transfer:
- Technology transfer from HEP is the
object of specific training at
CERN and in LA by CERN professors;
- A HEP Technology Data Base will be created and disseminated to
Funding Agencies and Industrial Unions
- Outreach:
- Participation of
graduate students to the CERN High
School Teachers Programme
- Training of the same students by the Outreach unit
at CERN.
Selection
of Grant-Holders
Notice:
For non-Spanish and non-Portuguese speaking countries, English
is considered sufficient as a working basis for research and
training. Sending Institutions must take care that grant-holders
are able to use English as a working language and eventually provide
the appropriate training.
- Grant-holders participating in exchanges between network institutions will be registered students at their
institutions of origin (see the page: Participants).
- In the case of academic staff, they will have to have a professional link to the institution of origin prior to the
submission of the proposal;
- Grant-holders should be nationals of the ALFA Programme's beneficiary countries, that is:
- The Member States of the European Union: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia,
Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, United Kingdom;
- The following 18 countries of Latin America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela.
- Applications must be addressed to the local Interlocutor (see the Participants
page), with a CV and a work program
(forms will be
provided on this site).
- The Rector of each University appoints a Local
Committee made by the Interlocutor plus two members; the Local
Committee proposes a list of candidates for each Grant, ordered
according to merit;
- An applicant for a Grant may not be in the Local
Committee;
- The Standing Executive Committee
fills the role of
a Central Committee, to ensure
homogeneity of the selection criteria
between the different nodes;
- The Central Committee reviews the proposals and
finally assigns the Grants,
- The names of Grant-Holders are published on the HELEN's website.
Grant-Holders
work programme
- Each Grant-Holder of the
Training Programme after
reaching the University/Laboratory of destination is assigned to one
experiment Team Leader or to a Senior Theorist, as appropriate who will
insert him/her in the appropriate research group and will assign
him/her to a tutor, chosen among the professors or researchers
participating in the Project.
- The tutor defines with the Grant-Holder the
research and academic programme he/she is going to develop and will
introduce him/her in the academic life of the Institute and will
generally survey the grant-holder during his/her stay.
- Grant-holders participating in the AT programme
(Advanced Training, for periods of 6 months or more) at one of the High
Education Institutes in Europe or LA or at CERN will follow courses in
the existing Doctoral Schools or in the CERN Academic Training
programme, with the supervision/assistance of the tutor.
- Each grant-holder has to take at least three
subjects:
- Basic Experimental Particle Physics (all)
- Basic Theoretical Particle Physics (all)
- Advanced Theory (optional)
- HEP technologies (optional), choosing one subject among:
- Detector Physics
- Accelerator
- Medical imaging
- GRID computing.
- Grant holders participating in the AT programme in
HEI in Europe are recommended to spend the last 2 months at CERN, for
experimental research at the corresponding experiment or for
theoretical work, as appropriate. In this case, the appropriate CERN
Team Leader or Senior Theorist will assign them a CERN supervisor.
These grant-holders can also take some training at CERN in the optional
subjects, as part of the programme defined with their tutor at the
beginning of the grant.
- AT grant-holders at HEI in Latin America are
similarly recommended to spend the last 2 months at the Pierre Auger
Observatory for experimental work.
- Grant-holders in CT (Complementary Training) will
follow undergraduate courses in Particle Physics at the HEI of
destination, under the supervision of the tutor.
- Grant-holders in STT (Short Term Training, up to 3
months) or Research Training (up to 3 months) may follow similar
courses, if their schedule permits and if they consider it appropriate.
- AT, SST and CT grant-holders submit to the Network
Coordinator mid-term and final brief reports of their activity,
including judgement on the performance of the network from the point of
view of teaching, research and organisational matters.
- RT grant-holders need to submit to the Network Coordinator only a final report of their activity.
Visits of Professors
Professors/tutors mobility along the network will allow them to
give seminars or short lecture series, to:
- Enhance training;
- Start new, collaborative, EU –LA and LA-LA
research;
- Oversee research internship of the grant-holders,
which is the principal form of training in the Project.
Professors/tutors submit to the Network Coordinator a brief report of
their travel.
