Travel tips to visit UCSD

Last update: 10 January 2004

Airlines

If you are coming from the Bay Area or from Chicago, your best option is Southwest Airlines. They have many daily flights from the Bay Area via San Jose(SJC) or Oakland. Flight from Chicago depart from the Midway airport.

You get very cheap fares by purchasing the ticket 14 days before departure. Here are the links to check the flight schedule or making reservations. Keep in mind that the online fares are generally cheaper.

From the east coast your best options are with United and US airways, via Denver, New York (La Guardia), Pittsburgh, or Philadelphia.

From Europe, you can fly British Airways that has a daily non-stop flight from London.

Long term parking at San Jose airport

If you are coming from SLAC, you can go I-280 south, then take I-880 North to Oakland, and after about 5 miles get off at "Coleman Ave - San Jose Airport". After going over the highway, make a left onto "Newhall" to the Park Shuttle & Fly longterm parking.

Transportation from San Diego airport to UCSD

There are many door-to-door shuttles serving the San Diego county. Just follow the signs for "Ground Transportation" and an agent will redirect you to the correct shuttle stop.

I usually use the Cloud 9 Shuttle. They accept all the major credit cards and have special pricing to and from UCSD.

Directions to UC San Diego

The campus is located 14 miles north of the airport, which is located on the bay in downtown San Diego.
Directions: [Yahoo!] [Mapquest]

If you are driving North/South on I-5 get off at "La Jolla Village Dr" exit and go west at the end of the ramp (make a left/right if travelling noryh/south-bound). Pass the intersection with "Villa La Jolla Dr" and the campus entrance and the Gilman visitor center will be immediately on your right.

The Physics Department is located at Mayer Hall close to the Gilman entrance of the campus on Gilman drive.

For more information you can use the interactive map of the campus. Here is a PDF map of the campus. Mayer hall is building 133 at 10C on this map.

Parking

On weekdays you need a parking permit to park in the yellow and Green parking lots. Parking is free on weekends and holidays unless otherwise specified at the lots.
The permit is $6/day and can be purchased at the Gilman visitor center or at the Gilman parking structure.

If you are visiting the Physics department the most convenient parkins lots are Revelle lots P102 and P103, the large parking lots P604 and P608 on Osler lane, and the Gilman parking structure P408.

Wireless Network at UCSD

Wireless network is available almost everywehre on campus, including the coffeshops, food courts, and the outdoors.

However, your wirelss card/device must be registered for you to access the network. If you will be visiting us, please email the MAC adress of your device to rahatlou@ucsd.edu and I will register it before your arrival.

Coffeeshop and pub

My favorite coffeeshop is Grove Cafe`! And yes... wireless is available!

Another good location is Art of Espresso which has many tables outdoor with wireless access of course.

If you like good beer and at a good price checkout the Porter's pub next to the Grove cafe`. As any other facility at UCSD wireless is also available at the pub.
