Visiting the Amaldi Center

Individuals wishing to visit the Amaldi Research Center are welcome to apply to our Visiting Scholar Scheme, which operates throughout the year. We envisage short term visits (2 weeks) up to long term visits (3 months). We welcome applications from scholars with interest in the research activities carried out by the Center.

Visiting Scholars are given access to research facilities and an office in the Physics Department. Travel and living expenses are supported by the Center.

	Nobuhiro Kimura University of Tokyo, Japan November 1 - November 30, 2019 Visit synopsis × Prof. Nabuhiro Kimura is full time Associate Professor at the Cryogenics Science Center of the High Energy Accelerator Organization, Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, University of Tokyo, and had a fundamental role in the design of the cryogenics system of the KAGRA gravitational wave interferometer. During his visit, Prof. Kimura gave a seminar at the INFN Gran Sasso Laboratories, and designed with us a prototype of a cooling unit for the future third generation gravitational wave interferometer Einstein Telescope. The unit is based on the high efficiency thermal links which is currently being tested at KAGRA: this technology will be fundamental for cooling the 100 kg ET mirrors to cryogenic temperatures.

	Vitor Cardoso Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon February 12 - February 25, 2019 Visit synopsis × Vitor Cardoso is professor of physics and leader of the gravity group at IST, Lisbon. He is a CERN Associate and is Chair of the COST Action GWverse. He is a world-leading expert in black-hole physics, strong gravity, and gravitational-wave tests of general relativity. Prof. Cardoso has a long-standing collaboration with the theoretical gravity group at Sapienza. During his visit, he gave a talk about black holes as fundamental physics laboratories and on the perspective of detecting effects of physics beyond general relativity with current and future detectors.
	Marcello Messina New York Univ at Abu Dhabi March 25 - June 25, 2019 Visit synopsis × Marcello Messina is a senior scientist at NUY at Abu Dhabi working on direct search for dark matter particles. Currently, he is the technical coordinator of the XENON experimentat the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. During his visit, he gave two seminar on the astrophysical and cosmological evidence for dark matter and on the direct search for a dark matter particle. He is working with G.Cavoto on the conceptual design of a new futuristic experiment on the detection of the Cosmic Neutrino Background and on light dark matter searches.
	Pau Amaro Seoane Institute of Space Sciences, Barcelona April 1-19, 2019, and November 4 - November 22, 2019 Visit synopsis × Will appear closer to the date of the visit.
	Bernard Whiting University of Florida June 24 - June 28, 2019 Visit synopsis × Prof. Bernard Whiting is a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration. During his visit, he worked on algorithms to search for gravitational-wave r-mode emission from neutron stars. This work is being carried out in tight collaboration with members of the Virgo group, and in particular with Andrew Miller, a graduate student of the joint PhD program between "Sapienza" and the University Florida under the supervision of Dr. Pia Astone and Prof. Bernard Whiting. He also held a seminar on stochastic background searches within the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration.
	Dinesh Loomba The University of New Mexico July 3 - July 18, 2019 Visit synopsis × Dinesh Loomba is professor at the University of New Mexico, where he works on developing new detectors for dark matter searches. He is a member of the DRIFT collaboration that aims at detecting dark matter with low pressurised gas time projection chamber in the Boulby Mine, UK. During his visit, he is working with G.Cavoto on the technical design of a new type of gas time projection chamber based on the use of He and CF4 at atmospheric pressure, with a GEM amplification and an optical readout with very advanced CMOS cameras (CYGNO-INITIUM project).
	Emanuele Berti Johns Hopkins University July 15 - August 2, 2019 Visit synopsis × Professor Emanuele Berti is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (and former Chair of its Division of Gravitational Physics) and President-Elect of the International Society of General Relativity of Gravitation. His research interests include black hole and neutron star structure, stability, dynamics and formation, and using gravitational waves to study binary black hole astrophysics, gravity at a fundamental level and cosmology, especially in the context of the LISA mission. Prof. Berti has a long-standing collaboration with the theoretical gravity group at Sapienza. During his visit he gave a talk about tests of general relativity in the strong-gravity regime with gravitational-wave observations of merging black holes.
	Marta Volonteri Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris, Sorbonne Université September 23 - October 4, 2019 Visit synopsis × Professor Marta Volonteri is Directeur de Recherche at the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris. She is an international recognized expert on galaxy evolution, the formation and evolution of massive black holes, accretion physics, stellar dynamics and gravitational waves. She is one of the co-chairs of the LISA astrophysics working group. During her visit, she gave the colloquium “Massive black hole binaries in the cosmos” and she worked in collaboration with the theoretical astrophysics group on the nature and properties of black hole seeds, the contribution of accreting black holes to cosmic reionization, and dynamical pairing of nuclear black holes during galaxy mergers.
	Simon Portegies Zwart Leiden University October 11 - October 19, 2019 Visit synopsis × Simon Portegies Zwart is a Professor of Computational Astrophysics at Leiden University. He is an internationally recognized expert in computational astrophysics over a wide range of interests, from the evolution of planetary systems, to binary stars, dense stellar systems and galactic nuclei. During his visit to our Department, he has given a colloquium on the “Troubled early evolution of the Solar system.” He had several meetings and discussions with members of the theoretical astrophysics group on the formation of massive black hole binaries from low-metallicity stars and on the merger fate of supermassive black holes in galaxies, as well on the dynamics of satellites of planets of the Solar system.
