Developing muon trigger detectors based on scintillators
Fast scintillators, with wavelength-shifting fibers, readout with Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM), are a very promising technology for muon trigger and tracking both for experiments at a Future Circular Collider and for possible future upgrades of the ATLAS experiment.
The group is currently carrying on laboratory studies on the performance of different types of scintillators, fibers and SiPM, in terms of:
- timing resolution
- muon detection efficiency
- spatial resolution (based on detector structure and on the usage of the timing information)
The layout of a possible trigger and tracking detector module is being defined, also with the help of detailed Geant4-based simulation, and with the construction and laboratory test of detector prototypes.
