RED-SEA
RED-SEA is an European project funded under the EuroHPC-2019 framework program and the call for Accordo Innovazione Calcolo ad alte prestazioni DM 02/08/2019 of MISE (currently MIMIT) from 1 April 2021 and a duration of 36 months.
The goal of RED-SEA is to develop next-generation interconnection networks that can support hundreds of thousands of computing nodes allowing HPC, HPDA and AI applications to scale to Exascale (1018 floating point operations per second). The EuroHPC RED-SEA consortium is made of 11 major istitutions in HPC field, both academic and industrial. On the italian side the consortium participating to the research activities funded by MISE, is composed of INFN and Exact-Lab, an Italian SME that acts as industrial leader of the project.
INFN in RED-SEA is involved in key activities ranging from providing basic contributions in the design phase of the network infrastructure with a hardware/software co-design approach, to porting and optimizing relevant scientific software packages on the new architecture.
The main areas of research activity of the RED-SEA project are:- The design of a high bandwidth, low-latency and highly scalable interconnection network, interoperable with the evolution of the Atos/Bull BXI2 product, the main European interconnection networks for HPC.
- The deployment of an high-performance and low-latency gateways for intra- and inter-node communication able to interface with standard Ethernet sections.
- The design of innovative specialised hardware/software components to improve network performance and resilience through fine-grained control of network congestion, effective implementation of collective operations, exploration of adaptive routing based on machine learning techniques.
- Porting and optimization of software applications of scientific interest on the new architecture for holistic system evaluation.
Furthermore, the technologies developed here will be implemented and tested on the testbeds of the ExaNeSt and EuroEXA projects.
